Law Boss Murphy Leads Family Firm To The Top

Hassan Murphy doesn’t know how to lose.
As managing partner of The Murphy Firm in Baltimore, Hassan has taken the practice to new levels since first joining his father in 1997 to help defend legendary boxing promoter Don King. Slowly growing both the company’s reputation and area of practice, he has emphasized the importance of an experienced staff that knows how to win.
And representing not only million-, but billion-dollar clients, Murphy built his own reputation separate from his famous father’s, Billy Murphy Jr.
“I like to have a hand in everything we are doing, every issue that comes up,” Murphy said. “This business is my baby and I don’t want anything to hold it back from doing as well as it can do.”
Moving from a West Madison Street office to the tower at the corner of Baltimore and South streets, Murphy is overseeing the next step in the company’s growth. Renting out a floor in the downtown building, the firm will be able to better serve its clients in areas such as commercial litigation, corporate investigation, medical malpractice and class action lawsuits.
Advancing the culture is also a priority at the practice, where along with ethics and doing things the right way, Murphy insists on being the best. He accepts nothing less than winning his clients’ cases, and expects the same from his employees.
“Dedication, commitment, and intense preparation,” Murphy said. “We have built the company to win in an ethical and legal way, while demonstrating integrity. We are paid to win.”
Despite being a graduate of Georgetown University’s law school, Murphy threw himself into volunteer work at the University of Maryland School of Law.
Donating free time and money, Hassan and his father help aspiring young lawyers through a scholarship in his grandparents’ names.
“He has a brilliant staff and runs his law firm with passion,” said Karen Rothenberg, dean of the University of Maryland School of Law. “For them to succeed the way they do, it’s because he has such leadership and vision to make it succeed. He has really raised the bar for philanthropy in the African-American community.”
