MURPHY FALCON & MURPHY FILES CLASS ACTION DATA BREACH COMPLAINT AGAINST LORIEN HEALTH

On April 9, 2021, Murphy Falcon & Murphy attorneys Nikoletta Mendrinos and Kaitlyn Holzer filed a complaint in Baltimore County Circuit Court on behalf of victims who suffered damages from the Lorien Health Services data breach.

Lorien Health Services is a company which operates nine assisted living and rehabilitation facilities across Maryland. Lorien’s network was hacked by a group operating Netwalker ransomware, a software that had been used throughout the pandemic to target healthcare organizations. The cyber hackers gained access to the sensitive personal information of approximately 44,000 patients and employees, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and health diagnosis and treatment information. The hackers later confirmed, via Twitter, that they had posted some of the information on the Dark Web.

As stated in the Complaint, with access to an individual’s personal information, criminals can empty a victim’s bank account, obtain a driver’s license or official identification card in the victim’s name, use the victim’s Social Security number to obtain a job or government benefits, request and open loans, file a fraudulent tax return, and commit medical identity theft. Furthermore, the loss of private and personal health information can expose the victim to loss of reputation, loss of employment, blackmail, and other negative effects.
