Where It All Began

Currently headed by William H. “Billy” Murphy, Jr. and his son, Hassan Murphy, the law firm was established more than 70 years ago by William H. Murphy Sr., a prolific lawyer who was born into slavery on Christmas of 1840. Murphy Sr. fought for his freedoms as a member of a Union army regiment during the Civil War before taking his talents to the courtroom, first as an attorney and later as a barrier-breaking judge.

Reflecting on the Murphy Family Legacy

The courage and dedication of great Grandfather Murphy were passed along to his son and three grandsons. All of them would further the Murphy family legacy as leaders in the civil rights movement for generations to come. Thanks to their efforts, Murphy, Falcon & Murphy has since litigated cases in state and federal courts across the country and has even argued before overseas courts, racking up nearly a billion dollars in verdicts and settlements for their clients along the way.

A Father-Son Civil Rights Duo

Before joining forces with his father, Hassan Murphy lived in New York and worked for one of the oldest law firms in the country. One fateful day, his father, Billy Murphy, called him to consult on a case that would change the course of their careers forever. The two men found great success and professional development in working together, and neither of them ever looked back. Now, two decades later and counting, the father-son civil rights duo continues their tireless work towards social justice, community service, and excellence in the practice of law.

Fighting for the Future

While their work has contributed to incredible progress in the civil rights movement, both Billy and Hassan feel that they still have lots of unfinished business in the areas of racial equality and civil rights. Billy is particularly concerned about an ultra-conservative Supreme Court’s ability to jeopardize the progress that so many have worked so hard to achieve, but this only bolsters him and Hassan’s fighting spirits. “We owe even more to our clients who entrust us to handle the most important problems in their lives,” Billy said. “It is truly a blessing, and we hope that history will show that we’ve lived up to the challenge.”
