NBC News has featured Murphy, Falcon & Murphy’s own William “Billy” Murphy, Jr. in their “Baltimore: ChangeMakers” series. The series is intended to introduce readers to “some of the individuals who are engaging youth, seeking to improve their neighborhoods block by block, and demanding that their voices be heard in corridors of power.”

Murphy, Jr. was selected to be featured for his work following the death of Freddie Gray, the African-American man who sustained fatal injuries to his spinal cord while being transported in a police van in April 2015. On behalf of Gray’s family, Murphy, Jr. negotiated a $6.4 million civil settlement with city officials in September 2015.

The great-grandson of the founder of the oldest black newspaper in Baltimore, Murphy, Jr. continues to fight for civil rights including America’s war on drugs, inner-city poverty, and police brutality allegations across the country.
