Case of William Green

On January 27, 2020, William H. Green was shot seven times while handcuffed in a patrol car.

This incident began because William was driving his car through Prince George’s County, Maryland, and he accidentally struck three parked cars. When police were called to the scene, they found Mr. Green asleep behind the wheel of his car. The two officers, including Michael A. Owen Jr., took William from the car, handcuffed his hands behind his back, and placed him in the front passenger seat of a police cruiser. While drugs were thought to have been involved, none were found in Mr. Green’s vehicle. There were also no weapons found inside his car.

Several minutes later, Mr. Owen got into the driver’s seat of his car. After several further minutes, witnesses heard gunshots ring out from inside the vehicle. Officer Owen shot William from point-blank range seven times, striking him six times in the torso. Mr. Green was dragged from the car, still alive and gasping for air, with his hands still cuffed behind his back. William Green was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

While former officer Owen claims that there was an altercation in the cruiser, investigators failed to find any evidence of a struggle. Murphy Falcon & Murphy represented the family of the late William H. Green, and were able to reach a settlement of $20 million with Prince George’s County over the death due to unlawful shooting by police.

Case of Freddie Gray

Freddie Gray was a Baltimore native who suffered a spinal injury while in police custody on April 12, 2015, which later resulted in his death on April 19, 2015.

Mr. Gray was originally arrested due to the possession of a knife that the apprehending police officers deemed to be illegal. There was footage from a passerby that showed Mr. Gray being placed into the police van, and being able to step into the van on his own, within 30 minutes of the arrest, paramedics were summoned to take him to the hospital.

Through acts of omission, including failure to properly restrain Freddie in the van, it is believed that he received the injuries to his neck and spine which ultimately resulted in his death. Six Baltimore officers that were present throughout the affair were suspended and placed on trial for the death of Mr. Gray.

While the jury ultimately acquitted the police officers of guilt in Gray’s death, the legal team at Murphy Falcon & Murphy was able to secure a settlement of $6.4 million on behalf of his family. With the help of Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, our firm pushed to prevent future violence by requesting body cameras on the city’s police officers.

Case of Albert Mosley

In 2005, Murphy Falcon & Murphy represented Albert Mosley, who was left with permanent and debilitating injuries in the case of severe police brutality.

In June of 2003, Mr. Mosley was picked up for violating his probation. While he was in his holding cell at a local Baltimore City police precinct, he became loud and rowdy. The officer in charge engaged in a shouting match with Mosley and later entered the cell. At this time, the officer picked up Mosley and tossed him violently against the wall. Unable to break his fall due to his handcuffs, he struck the wall with his head and lay bleeding and immobile for up to 45 minutes. During this incident, Albert suffered a paralyzing neck injury which has left him as a permanent quadriplegic, requiring 24-hour care from others.

The team at Murphy Falcon & Murphy was able to obtain a $44 million verdict in favor of Mr. Mosley for his pain and suffering, as well as for past and future medical expenses.
