Understanding Rollover Crashes: Why do Semi-Trucks Overturn
Although rollover crashes account for only 3.3 percent of all semi-truck accidents, these types of collisions are among the deadliest types of truck accidents that can occur on the highway. The reality is that large commercial trucks are especially at risk of rolling over, which can put all other drivers at risk of being involved in such accidents. But why do semi-trucks roll over so frequently? Common sense tells us that, because of their bigger size and heavier weight, these trucks should be more secure and stable. In this blog, we explain what causes trucks to overturn.
According to a study done by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, researchers found that out of 239 crashes that were investigated, nearly half were caused by failing to adjust speed properly on road curves and turns. When truck drivers fail to slow down as they approach a turn, the high level of centrifugal force from the imbalanced road can cause the truck load to flip over. Because normal passenger vehicles have a lower center of gravity and a higher rollover threshold, these types of accidents are more common to semi-trucks and big rigs.
Inattention, distraction, and steering issues can all be considered as common causes for rollover accidents. Driver fatigue is a major concern for traffic safety administrations, and there are regulations implemented to keep tired truckers off the road. General driver inexperience and failure to take into considering the height and weight of such large vehicles when steering or operating the truck causes accidents on the road.
